JOB HUNT GUIDES
VAULT Favorite"The Job Seeker's Secret Weapon." Get free capsule and snapshot reports on major companies. Paid members may access additional in-depth reports and the message board archives. The free research is invaluable, especially for new entrants to the job market. The snapshot for glossy magazine publisher Conde Nast, for example, describes its recent history, significant products, major competitors and hiring style. Comments are forthright. "Condé Nast's brutal hiring techniques are legendary," says Vault, and quotes a Conde Nast HR staffer admitting that "We often keep you hanging. If we like you, we might call you in for several interviews in the course of a year - but you might not get any of the jobs." The company message boards (posts can be viewed free only for 60 days) can get feisty. They give you a good feel for a company's style and who is likely to succeed there. Marketers and executives can also use the boards to monitor the vibes of their own companies and those of their competitors. Industry home pages report on employment issues in fields like Media & Marketing, Consumer Products & Retail, Consulting and Internet. In addition to career advice, Vault has a job board of its own, with over 100 jobs in marketing as of July 2003. (March 1999, revised August 2003)
