AMERICA'S CAREER INFONET

http://www.acinet.org/acinet/default.asp

Sponsored by the US Department of Labor, the Wages and Trends pages report wages by profession and location. The numbers conflate a range of seniority levels, limiting their usefulness, but it's interesting to compare wages in a state to the national average. Hiring trend data compares employment in 2000 with projected employment in 2010. The ranks of marketing managers, for example, are projected to swell from 190,300 to 245,600, with 8,260 average annual job openings. Start searches within the "Management" job family before searching within specific industries. For timely data on the general pace of wage increases, see the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In the 12 months ending June 30, 2003, compensation in private industry advanced 3.5%.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY SALARY SURVEY

http://publishersweekly.reviewsnews.com/index.asp?layout=article&articleId=CA309355&display=searchResults&stt=001&text=salary

PW's latest survey, released in July 2003, reveals that salaries in book publishing rose a healthy 5.1% in 2002. VPs of sales and marketing can expect to earn from $77,000 to $206,000, depending on the size of their company. Plum jobs are scarce, however. "The longer a person remains in the industry, the more he or she is not likely to recommend publishing as a career. Only 8% of those in publishing for less than five years said they would advise against joining the profession, while 16% of those with five to 10 years in publishing would counsel against moving into the industry, and 17% of veterans with more than 10 years service would recommend against joining the publishing corp.... People's views of publishing as a career appear tied in part to how they see the chances for advancement. Sixty-one percent of people who have been in publishing for more than 10 years said they see little chance for a promotion, while 62% of industry members with less than five years experience believe they will advance."
